Other sellers will just let you buy or offer generator which is under rated or not enough base on what you really need. Just to have sale! Not knowing it will cost  fortune to buyer because it will burn the generator or the appliances, worst is fire.
 
How to simply compute watts needed?
1. Add (sum) wattage of appliances to be use
2. To find at least "minimum" watts you need to consider:
You need to have 20% allowance on wattage reserved (never use full capacity)
Surge - Appliance has starting/surge: 2-3x  their wattage (ex. aircon 1200watts x3 =3600watts *1.2 (20% ) ) it means for 1 aircon you need atleast 4320 watts - (5000 watts available generator)
Staggered - Using all appliances at once will consume 2-3x your total wattage (Surge)
That's why staggered is advisable in running appliances, start with the high wattage
Ex. after surge of the Aircon in our sample it will go back to 1200watts 
It means you will still have remaining wattage (5000 watts * 80% (20% reserve) = 4000 watts minus running aircon 1200watts you still have remaining 2800watts.
 Can you still add? YES.. consider surge, then connect other appliances one at a time (you can also monitor the meter/indicator)
 
Q: In our sample, can a 3500watts run an aircon?
A: Yes, but its not advisable. During surge or starting it will consume the whole capacity of the generator and it might take time before it stabilize, considering temperature it needs to achieve before the compressor stop and once temp drops the compressor will start again and will cause surge. So YES it can but  definitely a NO for us!
 
Tips:
1. Consider what is  highest wattage of appliance you will use (compute for surge, then use the staggered)
2. Compute.. low wattage? YES your appliance will run but not knowing consequences in the future.
3. Generator is mostly use as back up only! Being thrifty or using minimal appliance might be helpful :) during blackouts. You might consider using fans while waiting for the electricity??
